Workplace Regulations

Frequently Asked First Aid Questions

Essential advice regarding UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) first aid requirements and business obligations.

Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, every employer must carry out a first aid needs assessment. For low-hazard workplaces (such as offices and retail) with under 25 employees, at least one appointed person is required; with 25-50 employees, at least one EFAW (1-Day) qualified person is recommended. For higher-hazard workplaces (construction, manufacturing, warehousing) or larger teams, at least one 3-Day FAW trained first aider is required for every 50 employees.

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 1-day (6 hour) foundation course covering primary assessment, CPR, AED usage, choking, and minor bleeding for low-hazard sites. First Aid at Work (FAW) is a comprehensive 3-day (18 hour) Level 3 qualification that covers everything in EFAW plus major illnesses (heart attack, stroke, diabetes), fractures, head/spinal trauma, burns, and eye injuries for higher-hazard industries.

Yes, our 2-Day (12-Hour) Paediatric First Aid course strictly complies with the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Ofsted guidelines, making it suitable for nursery workers, childminders, and pre-school teachers.

All regulated First Aid certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of assessment. Before your 3 years elapse, you can take a 2-Day FAW Requalification course (for 3-day certificate holders) or re-take the 1-Day EFAW course.

Yes! We regularly deliver on-site training for businesses across the UK. Our trainer arrives with all training gear, and you save substantially on travel costs and per-delegate pricing.
